Cement is a material that sets and hardens independently, and is used to bind other materials together. Throughout history and through to the modern day, cement is primarily used in construction and engineering. Today, within the realm of construction, Portland cement, the main type of cement in use, is the basic ingredient of concrete, mortar and most non-specialty grout.
Portland cement’s is mainly used for the bonding of natural or artificial aggregates to form a strong building material which is durable in the face of normal environmental effects. Even though cement is a primary ingredient in many substances, the most common use for Portland cement is for the production of concrete. Concrete is a composite material consisting of aggregate, which is gravel and sand, cement, and water. As a construction material, concrete can be cast in almost any shape desired, and once hardened, can become a structural or load bearing element. Users may be involved in the factory production of cast units, such as panels, beams, road furniture, or may make cast on site concrete such as building super-structures, roads, and dams. These may be supplied with concrete mixed on site, or may be provided with "ready-mixed" concrete made at permanent mixing sites. Concrete is the primary material used in construction worldwide, and therefore makes cement primarily used for concrete creation. In addition to concrete, Portland cement is also used in mortars with sand and water, for plasters and screeds, and in grouts, or cement/water mixes squeezed into gaps to consolidate foundations, road-beds. |
